First Grade Art Showcase

tree art
Haylee Schuler
In this Fall project, an oil pastel for the tree was used with warm colored leaves (red, yellow, and orange) and the blue is tempera cake paint. Students created a 'wash' by adding a little paint to lots of water. Then they went over the whole thing with the wash. The oil pastel protected the paper from getting wet, and covered up by the paint it created a 'resist'.

This first grade project was inspired by the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) and its use of bright colors and geometric repetition. The mediums used were watercolor and oil pastel.
